What is Transition Shire about?

CANWin’s Transition Shire Wingecarribee (TSW) is a grass-roots initiative that encourages all members of our local community to think about how we can create a sustainable future together.

The Transition movement became an election issue in Wingecarribee during the last council elections, as it became apparent that the community will need to be more self-reliant. The rise in energy costs due to oil shortages and carbon trading will eventually require local production of food, energy and many goods and services.

Transition refers to the process of becoming more resilient.

While our society is totally dependent on the ready availability of cheap oil and fossil fuels, peak oil and peak energy categorically herald the beginning of the end of the oil era.

But how will we wean ourselves off our oil addiction? Will we make a concious decision to adapt to the challenges of dwindling oil, or will we continue to ignore the elephant in the room?

Although they pose monumental threats to our security and safety, peak oil and climate change offer us a tremendous opportunity to evaluate the way we live and to imagine a new future for our communities.
